Mpox: Understanding the Disease, Its Impact, and Prevention

Introduction Mpox, previously known as monkeypox, is a viral zoonotic disease that was first discovered in 1958 when two outbreaks occurred in colonies of monkeys kept for research, hence the name. However, the disease is more common in rodents, and humans can contract it from these animals. The first human case was recorded in 1970 in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Over the years, Mpox has primarily affected people in Central and West Africa, but in recent times, it has gained global attention due to outbreaks in non-endemic countries. Etiology and Transmission Mpox is caused by the monkeypox virus, a member of the Orthopoxvirus genus, which also includes the variola virus (the cause of smallpox), vaccinia virus (used in the smallpox vaccine), and cowpox virus. The virus is transmitted to humans from animals through direct contact with the blood, bodily fluids, or cutaneous or mucosal lesions of infected animals.
